Editor's Note

My mother was a “new thought” minister, meaning her church concentrated on far less-than-doctrinaire interpretations of Christian teachings. So, not being constrained by fundamentalist fears, she was OK with having a psychic reading or two. One time a psychic told her that her deceased father, my dead grandfather, was now living on the inside of the moon! Mom told me this with a straight face, and I cracked up.

But with the recent deaths of notable UFO figures, I got to thinking about this and decided it’s not too far-fetched to at least wonder about at a time of grief. After all, if the human soul is an energy form without physical needs, and the moon is conceivably hollow, why not? There must be some reason for all the secrecy that has surrounded moon exploration since the end of the Apollo missions! I like the thought of going to the moon—thanks, Bert Rutan!—and conceivably running into the souls of Betty, John, Gordo … and Grandpa. Maybe Mom is up there, too.

Slight silliness aside, we sadly have to accept the transitoriness of material incarnation. We will miss these individuals but always remember their great contributions to our world.

Some years back, Dan Aykroyd had a short-lived ministry on a sit-com I really enjoyed called Soul Man. Of course they cancelled it; they always do. But the ever-fickle and often vicious entertainment business has not quelled Dan’s interest in things ufological. This landmark issue presents what we hope will be a continuing feature-—the celebrity interview! As they come out the closet, we hope to snatch them, and maybe Dan’s brave step forward will start a trend.

As broader trends go, the current atmosphere seems loaded with enmity. We begin 2005 with hopes for unity, not division. Since this is being written just after the Presidential election, the view looks poor for reconciliation between political parties, but this once again reminds us of another reason to value UFOs and ETs—they transcend even the most entrenched divisions and unify us with the stirring recognition of an endless cosmos and the unimaginable proliferation of life and creation in a reality that we’re just beginning to discover. Anyone want to challenge that? Bring it on!

In sum: Happy, hearty, healthy holidays from all of us at UFO Magazine, and a thoroughly alive 2005!
