The UFO that's not a UFO

This is a photo that Jeff Woolwine sent us on June 28, 2006.

We've since been flooded with email telling us that this photo is a time-lapse image of a regular airplane. Here are some of the letters we received, and a couple of additional photos:

Please check out the attachment. Its a Boeing 117, no doubt.

I don't know how anyone could confuse this photo with a UFO!

I am a trained aeronautical mechanic (A&P) and spent many years observing aircraft of all kinds. Combine that with the fact that I love photography and have operated my own color studio for many years. This is a TIMED exposure. The aircraft traversed the sky with blinking lights and continuously illuminated landing/take-off lights during the timed exposure. One can even estimate the size of the aircraft by looking at the beginning of the continuously illuminated streak and the alternating blinking lights. A person taking a picture with a tripod of an aircraft with blinking lights and landing lights at the same time would capture the city lights as seen in the photo and exactly what is seen in this sky.

You have been duped. I cannot believe you are so ignorant of photographic techniques and still produce a magazine like UFO Magazine. You do a serious discrediting of UFO research by lending credence to such an obvious misrepresentation of every-day occurrences.

Please do not confuse the obvious UFO visitations with such common occurrences as this. It makes all of your conclusions suspect.

I just saw the latest UFO photo in Phoenix, Az from a link on the Coast to Coast website. The first thing I thought was that it looked familiar. It looks an awful lot like a UFO capture over Washington D.C. (above) I believe someone said they caught this photo on the D.C. webcam site. I am unsure if anyone ever proved this one was real or not. There was not much stir about it so I assumed it was a fake. I believe this photo was on the Coast to Coast AM website within the last year. Just thought I'd share.

I am a ufologist and researcher for many years and wanted to take this opportunity to point out that the photo you have blazened across your front page is nothing more than a time-lapse photo of a jet.

I've captured many of the same looking type of photographs. This is a result of the camera's shutter remaining open longer to allow more light in. In the old days this would have been in the "B" mode, but more frequently known as a time-lapse shot. The longer the shutter of the camera stays open, the more time elapses for any luminous object to create a streak. And the FAA strobes fire off at intermittent times creating the row of rapid looking "portholes/lights." The constant white streak is simply the jets front floodlights ...

To illustrate this further, i went outside and shot some overhead jets on a 3 second time-lapse mode. This was a very basic and simplified shot requireing no manipulation, but replicates closely to what Mr. Woolwine is trying to passs off as a UFO. If only the front floods had been on, these shots would be dead-on.

I believe the photos will speak for themselves..

Since i enjoy your magazine and there are so many skeptics that don't wish us or our community well, I felt compelled to bring this to your attention if we are to be taken seriously at all, we have to be carefull not to give them any added fuel for the "debunking-fire."

I wish you continued success with the magazine.

I thought I would just comment that this is a pretty cool photo over Phoenix, except you spelled the state wrong -- it's Arizona, not Airzona. Heh.
